The adventure began with a tip-off about a comic collection for sale in West Hambledon. When I heard about the 6,000 comics ranging from 1901 to 1980, mostly from the Silver Age, my inner comic book nerd couldn't resist. Little did I know, I was in for the workout of my life.
When I arrived at the penthouse apartment, the first thing I noticed was the complete absence of an elevator. I should have turned back when I saw those eight flights of stairs, but the lure of potential comic gold kept me going. After all, who needs leg day at the gym when you have 6,000 comics to move?
As I began the descent with the first box, I realized just what a monumental task this was going to be. There were gems in this collection, including a pristine Werewolf by Night #32, two copies of Marvel Premiere #5, and an Avengers #57 that made my heart race faster than a speeding bullet.
Picture this: a comic book enthusiast, balancing precariously on a narrow staircase, sweating like he'd been caught in Spidey's web. I nearly tripped over a cat (possibly a supervillain in disguise) and nearly dropped a box, which would have caused a mini avalanche of comics. Thankfully, my superhuman balance remained true.
After what felt like an eternity (and about 15,000 steps, according to my fitness tracker), I finally had all the comics loaded into my van. I waved goodbye to the penthouse and the lovely seller, who handed me a bottle of water and a protein bar, probably out of pity.
Once back at Fantasy Road HQ, I laid out the treasures and marvelled at the collection. The effort was worth every drop of sweat and every aching muscle. The comics were now part of our ever-growing inventory, ready to be loved by new collectors. From silver Fantastic four, and Avengers, starting as low as issue #7, to complete runs of countless bronze and silver series. It was beautiful.
