One of the end of year titles from Boom Studios! and as usual, on first glance, backed up further by picking up the book, you can instantly feel the quality put into it. Boom! have an amazing ability to produce comics that feel expensive and that there is care put into not just the content, but how they are presented. Unlike other studios that won’t be named (M****l).
So now were done with sucking up to Boom! (send us free issues), let's get on with the reason we're here... One of their newest Horror books... Behold Behemoth!
From the mind of Tate Brombal of House of Slaughter, fame, and amazing artist Nick Robles (The Dreaming: Waking Hours) comes the tale of Greyson, his world falling apart, amidst the murders and nightmares that this world expertly crafts for us.
The first thing I noticed, upon opening the (as previously established) quality front cover, is the art style. Here, each page feels alive with a palate surrounding yellows or blues depending on what is happening within, though with some exceptions, but I will get to that. One thing that becomes immediately clear is that there is an edge to it, something different, that separates the reader from what is going on. The best way I can describe it is that it's like looking through an old single pane window, distortions, lines and colours floating in that space between the story and the reader. It was refreshing and a nice touch to do something different but not cloud the pages. Oh, and another point... Just wait until you see the double spread splash pages, the first one is so vivid I could feel the sun's rays coming off the page.
I was immediately sucked in with by what seems like a mystery to be solved, something is going on with Greyson and there's a history that is touched upon, but not quite delved into. At least not yet…
We're hit with some flashbacks, which are done so well, that they leave me wanting more. Here they have a different art style that works to split the narrative, whether that's the past or to 'another world' full of devastation.
Overall I was really drawn into this book, wanting to know more and more, ending in murder, blood and… Monsters! What more could a comic fan want? With the book closed, a thousand questions run through my head, like why do Mr Wyatt and his family have crosses on their heads? What is going on with Wren and what in god's name is the massive monster!
The final pages here you really don't see coming, but only furthered my appetite for more.
Final words, Do I know what's going on…not a clue! But do I want to read more? Hell yes! In fact, I have issue 2 ready to go. For my last read of 2022 I'm going to have to give this a solid 10/10
